How to keep customers coming back to your salon

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

You work hard to give your clients amazing hair experience. And you want to keep good things going, right? Here are some things you can do to help clients come back for more.

Do good work. This may seem obvious, but if your clients aren’t happy, they won’t come back. Go above and beyond to provide the best service you can. So do your homework so you learn all the ins and outs of extensions. (Learn more about hair extension certification.)

Be professional. This doesn’t mean you can’t be friendly and talkative while you work, but you want to prove you know what you’re doing. Be early, keep your tools clean, and be upfront about pricing.

Educate your client. If you client knows how to take care of her extensions, they’ll last longer and she’ll be happier. Remind her about the things that will help make her extensions last, such as brushing three times a day and avoiding products with sulfates. Knowledge is power!

Schedule her next appointment before the client leaves. She’ll have the best experience with her extensions if she has regular appointments for her maintenance and touch ups, so you want to make sure she doesn’t miss them. Touch ups should be about every 6 to 8 weeks.

Foster loyalty. Did you know that customers more loyal to their hairdressers than to any other brand or business? Most people are looking for a stylist they can trust and stay with for a long time. So be that stylist! Offer honest advice and educate your clients about hair health. If she trusts you, she’ll keep coming back because she knows that you’ll be helping her have amazing hair.

Lauren Winans’ hair extension experience

Friday, February 15th, 2013

We want to welcome our guest blogger, up-and-coming singer Lauren Winans. Lauren was kind enough to share her hair extension experience with us.

Hi everyone! I am Lauren Winans. I am a singer/songstress and total girly girl who is in love with Donna Bella Hair Extensions! I am going to be blogging on how to extension style, maintenance, and much more. I personally have been wearing Donna Bella hair for a several months. I have the 18 inch Kera-Links. This hair is bonded in so well that I have had no slipping. Every single piece of hair is still in place, just like the first day I had them inserted. Keep in mind, I had to find a stylist who was certified in Donna Bella Extensions. I wouldn’t just want anyone gluing hair to my head! Donna Bella not only offers fusion extensions; they also offer Beaded, Tape-In, and Clip-Ins. There is something for everyone.

I chose the Kera-Links because I had already had the beaded and the clip in extensions. I had a different brand, but I still knew I was ready for the fused-in hair. It is super easy for me to fix my own hair this way. I have baby fine hair, so Clip-In extensions tend to show if i move my head too much on stage or in a photo shoot. That is why I like the Kera-Links. They come in packs of 20 strands of hair and your extensionist uses her bonding tool to glue them in. (Don’t be scared! They have remover.) The extensions come out and does not damage your real hair as long as you keep up with your maintenance. I was always told to braid my hair so that it isn’t flying all over the place on my pillow creating a rat’s nest! You can braid into pig tails or one single braid down your back and your hair should be secure.

I quickly learned that maintenance is very important when you have hair extensions. If you do not properly take care of the extensions, you will lose them sooner or have breakage of your own hair. I keep multiple natural bristle brushes on hand because the bristles can go through your spaces where the hair was placed. Donna Bella actually has their own hair extension brush, which I recommend buying!

I will be talking with my own glam squad about all the ways to keep your hair looking great and updating you with what I keep learning about it myself. Keep up with me on and right here on

Get Sexy Hair for Valentine’s Day

Monday, February 11th, 2013

Whether you’ve got a romantic night out planned with your loved one or you’re heading to the club with your girlfriends to celebrate being single, you’re going to want to have fantastic hair. Valentine’s Day is coming up soon, so there’s still time to plan your look for the big night.

Here are a few ways to spice up your look to be extra flirty:

Add some volume This is what hair extensions were made to do! When you have lots of hair to work with, you can really get creative with updos and big, full curls.
Add some color Extensions are also a great way to add highlights and lowlights to your hair. If you want a change but aren’t ready for something drastic for your night on the town, ask your stylist about adding color with Kera-Link or I-Link Extensions. If you’re in for a wilder night, you can “dip-dye” your hair by using washable hair chalk to add bright colors to your tips.
It’s all about balance If you’re going with a more subtle, natural makeup look, then it might be nice to do more with your hair–like curling it or tying it up into a hair do. If you’re going all out with makeup, let your hair be more relaxed. Choose which features you want to play up and don’t go overboard with everything.
Add Accessories You don’t need to be cliche and put a red heart clip in your hair, but a thin headband or hair jewel can do just the trick to make your style extra sexy.
Perfume it Up Did you know that if you spray perfume in your hair instead of on your skin, its fragrance will last longer?

No matter what your plans are, Valentine’s Day is an excellent excuse to dress up your hair and look fabulous.

Finding a great hair extension stylist

Friday, February 1st, 2013

So you want to get hair extensions? You’ll need to find a stylist to install them and maintain them for you. But you don’t want just any stylist–you want someone who is experienced, skilled, and in your price range.

One of the best ways to find a great stylist is through a recommendation. Ask a friend who has a similar hair type and style to yours and ask her who her stylist is. Ask someone who has had hair extensions who their stylist is.

As awesome as word of mouth may be, sometimes you don’t have that luxury. If you move to a new area or don’t trust any of your friends, try our Find a Stylist page here.

Usually, hair extension training is not included in a basic cosmetology license, so you can’t go to just anyone. The first thing to find out from a potential stylist is whether or not they are certified and have experience with hair extensions.

Before it comes time to pick a stylist, you want to make sure their services are going to be in your price range. Don’t be shy about asking for a general price quote. It can be tricky to get an exact price estimate without an in-person consultation, but you should be able to get a ballpark figure. (You can read more about what to expect about pricing here.)

There are thousands of highly qualified stylists out there, ready to make your hair extension experience worthwhile. You just need to find one that fits you!
