Who Says Funky isn’t Classy?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2014

Bright, monochromatic, and pastel colors are no longer a “gothic” or a “punk” style. More and more people are opening up to the hair color trend. Thanks to celebrities like Nicole Richie, Kelly Osbourne, Demi Lovato, and Katy Perry, the hair colors have been given a spotlight with a classy twist. Along with the exposure in social media, the trend has been spreading like wildfire. Curious to know how they do it?

First off, if you’re a blondie, it’ll be much easier and cause less damage to your hair. Why? Because no matter what color you choose, you’re going to need to go as blond as possible—we’re talking almost white, especially if you want a vibrant color. Compared to a brunette, there will be fewer bleaching sessions for you, since your hair is much closer to the white-blond color you need. Bleaching is the key to achieving the color you want. For example, if you’re going red and your blond has any tint of yellow in it, you’re going to come out with orange hair. Yellow+red=orange. To avoid this catastrophe, go as close to white as possible. For brunettes, patience is a virtue. It’s also a good idea to break up the bleaching sessions. Yes, it may be a bummer to have to wait a little longer to achieve the blue or lavender you’ve been eyeing, but take it from us—your hair will thank you for it. You want this new color to look as healthy as possible, not overly fried. With too much bleach in a short amount of time, that’s something you risk. Keep in mind that when you choose to do these colors they can be really high maintenance. These types of colors tend to fade quickly, so you’ll be going in for regular touch-ups. Washing your hair less often and with cold water will be something to get used to. The hair cuticle doesn’t open up as much as it does under hot water, therefore letting less color out, preserving your hue longer. The good news—Donna Bella has extensions in all of the hottest colors! So if you thought you had to give up your hair extensions for hair color, think again! You can have your stylist color your natural hair to match our extension colors or you can opt out of coloring your natural hair and achieve the hair color only through installing hair extensions (which is also less damaging on your hair). Are you bold enough to catch on to the trend? Let us know if you have any questions, we’re here to help!

Pump Up The Volume

Friday, August 15th, 2014

In case you weren’t aware, Donna Bella Hair Extensions aren’t only worn for length. Many of our customers with thin hair love the volume that they get with hair extensions. While some choose to wear a full head, others wear just a few rows for that extra oomph they can’t get from their natural hair. If you can relate, read on.

Just because you have fine or thin hair doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy hair extensions like everyone else. If you choose the I-Link method, make sure that more of your natural hair is being pulled through the bead. For thin hair, a flare bead is better because it is longer, crimping more hair (lengthwise) in the bead and putting less stress on natural hair. A silicone bead is also perfect for fine, thin, or sensitive hair. These silicone beads are made of aluminum with an inner silicone lining that reduces slippage and holds hair gently and securely. Another customer favorite for thin or fine hair are the Tape-In hair extensions because they put less stress on fine hair strands. We also offer single sided tape that is especially designed for women with extra fine hair.

Clip-Ins, which can be popped in and out easily, work just as well if you don’t mind taking the extra time to clip them in yourself. We recommend that if you’re using them for just volume, to get a shade as close to your hair color as possible. If it’s a little off, you can always take them to your stylist to have them colored to match your hair. Remember, you can deposit color but not lift it. So if you’re unsure when order, go lighter rather than darker.

So, if it’s just volume you want, consult with your stylist on which of these methods would be the best for you. It’s even more affordable than you think. Because hair extension prices get higher as lengths get longer, if you’re just looking for volume, you can certainly save money on your extensions. You also save when it comes to the installation cost if you’re opting to just have a few rows installed, rather than a full head.

Put down the root lifters and boosters and give hair extensions a chance. Still not sure? Let us know; we’d love to answer your questions.

Get Your Hair Back to School Ready

back to skoo blog

Damaging your hair is easy which means repairing your hair has to be hard right? Well, given some time and the proper products, it can actually be pretty easy. The summer season filled with heat and humidity, and coupled with schedules filled with fun activities, it’s easy to neglect our hair care regimens. Now that back to school is around the corner, you might want to give your hair a little TLC for all those selfies you’ll be taking in class to post on Facebook and Instagram, and who could forget the ever-important yearbook photo?! Here’s our advice to help you repair the damage just in the nick of time.

Post Conditioning. After washing your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo, use an ultra-hydrating conditioner. Apply a plant-derived moisturizing conditioner like our KeraExtend™ Conditioner (which also contains keratin to repair your hair). Coat your ends and apply heat with a blow dryer. The heat makes the conditioner able to penetrate hair for a deeper condition. We recommend doing this at least once a week, but no more than three times per week.

Treatment Masks. Our KeraExtend™ Mask is a great product that contains special ingredients to help your ends look and feel better. Stay away from any products that have silicone, as they can sometimes do more harm than good to your hair extensions. Another stylist favorite is Joico’s K-Pak Intense Hydrator because the shea butter provides elasticity for dry hair. It also creates a polished surface.

Shine. Hair oil is damaged hair’s best friend. We’d recommend our Donna Bella Argan Oil, which is a non-greasy conditioning oil that softens and shines hair. When choosing an oil, make sure it contains Argan oil, vitamin E, avocado oil, or a protective, antioxidant-rich grape seed oil. These kinds of ingredients repair the dryest of strands while smoothing them out and adding shine. They also help fight frizz and flyaways.

hair extension kits

As stylists, we love being creative and trying out new, innovative ways to keep our clients happy while also gaining new ones in the process. It requires us to try new methods and techniques to provide an array of services tailored to fit each member of our clientele. At Donna Bella, we understand that this is not always easy, and we are constantly looking for new ways to help you grow your business and improve your skills. If you’ve already mastered one technique of hair extension installation, why not master another? If you’ve never offered hair extension installations, why not start? The more skills you have, the more you’ll attract more business because of your ability to cater to different needs and styles. That’s why we’ve put together our Hair Extension Kits.

Donna Bella’s Hair Extension Kits are available for each individual pro method (I-Link, Kera-Link, and Tape-In). Sometimes it’s hard to learn a new technique, especially if we’ve become biased to one specific method because that’s what we’re comfortable with. But like they say, “Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.” For that reason we’ve put together these starter kits. Each kit contains all the tools you’ll need to get started, including one pack of 18 inch hair in the color of your choice. Along with these starter kits we also offer online education and free tutorials to help you navigate your way through this new journey, teaching you all the tips and tricks there are to know. And for the really ambitious—we offer the Ultimate Hair Extension Kit which includes all the tools you’ll need to get started in all three methods!
