DONNA BELLA BUSINESS TIP FOR
February 3, 2011

Question:

At a trade show in California, I purchased some small diamond-like hair bling that could be taped to long hair for fancy occasions like proms, or weekend parties. As I recall, Donna Bella had these at their booth but I don’t see them on the website. Did I buy them from your company or is my memory slipping?

Carria B. – Baldwin Harbor, California

Answer:

You are absolutely correct. That is our product. These sparkly diamonds known as ICE are a new item that we are testing in tradeshows nationwide to see how popular they will be with stylists.

We refer to the “hair bling” as hair jewels. These preset diamond-like jewels are positioned on strips of tape that can be easily taped onto the hair. The clear tape can be cut and applied anywhere on the hair, including the bangs. ICE diamonds come in clear, blue, or ruby red colors.

ICE hair jewels are a quick and simply way to convert hair extensions or any other hair style into a dress-up night or out on the town event. Order ICE by calling Donna Bella Milan at 888.424.7548.

Must Attend Trade Shows

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

DONNA BELLA BUSINESS TIP FOR
January 25, 2011

Question:

Everyone tells me that I ought to attend a beauty trade show to keep up to date on what is happening in the beauty industry. There are no large trade shows in our state. Do you have a suggestion for cities with great trade shows and which months of the year, their shows take place?

Tillie, S. – Broken Arrow, Oklahoma

Answer:

Check with locale distributors for small regional events that are sponsored by beauty supply distributors. But for the real-deal, consider traveling to one of the following cities (at least once a year) that hold annual events often on the same weekend year-after-year.

Long Beach, CA January
Chicago, IL March
Bologna, Italy March
New York City, NY March
Las Vegas, NV June
Orlando, FL June
Birmingham, AL October

Are Trade Shows Worth My Time?

Monday, January 24th, 2011

The salon and beauty industry is constantly changing and there is no better way for you to keep up with innovation than to attend a national or regional trade show. Trade shows give you a professional shot-in-the-arm and reenergize your connection to the beauty industry.

For those of you who have never lived near or traveled to a large beauty event, you are in for a real treat. Take a camera to record your impressions. The color, sound, and human energy pulsates up and down every isle of the show. It’s an educational extravaganza on steroids.

The big question for most stylists is how do I justify the expense and time away from the salon. Each day that I’m gone means less money in my pocket and more work when I get back home. Who will watch the children? Where will I stay? What will I learn? Am I wasting my time?

Going to trade shows is your best method for continuous, up-to-date education. Accountants, lawyers, programmers, and a thousand other professions have a need for continuous education, why not our industry? To get the most from your experience, try these five ideas for visiting trade shows.

One – Plan Well In Advance
Make all of your travel arrangements early so that you get the best deals on hotels and airfare. Search the Internet for Priceline deals or locate small boutique hotels that are within walking distance of the convention center venue. Save your money in advance of the show so that you aren’t using credit to fund the experience.

Two – Act Like You Are A Reporter
Attend a show with the mindset that you are there to learn, learn, learn. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions when speaking with manufacturers reps and other stylists. Look for demonstrations and be willing to take a lot of notes. Put a star by things you write down that could be helpful to your business and interesting to your customers.

Three – Take A Camera and Keep Snapping
Use the show for marketing. Call some of your best customers while attending the show and tell them that you noticed a new look or thought of an idea that they may want to try. They will love the fact that you remembered them while attending a national event. Email customers and co-workers a photo or two to help them feel part of your experience.

Four – Be Wise About Tradeshow Specials
Most manufacturers offer tradeshow specials and some will extend those specials to you beyond the trade show dates. On the first day of the show, take a quick spin around the trade show floor to get a feel for the type of products and education that is available. Don’t be too quick to spend your money on products that you see the very first day. Jot down booth numbers that you would like to revisit.

Five – Evaluate Your Experience
After the dust settles and you are back home again, make some notes in a trade show journal about what you might do differently if given a chance. By thinking through the best and worst of the show, you’ll be better prepared for next year’s gathering. Try flying to different cities each year to compare the “personality” of that show and that region of the country.

Check out our post titled “Must Attend Trade Shows” dated 01/25/11 for the months and cities of the industry’s best events.

Some big hair art

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

The International Fantasy Hair Competition, held in Manchester, NH, is about turning hair into art. But as it turns out, this isn’t just a beauty show but a good cause too. All proceeds for the night went to the New Hampshire Food Bank.

Stylists compete to make what look like the most absurd hair hats they can dream up. And the prizes range from $1000 to $7500. But the real work is done perhaps by the models, whom say the main ingredient for them is “Pain. Lots and lots of pain,”. And i guess its understandable. Melody Longobardi, 26, was forced by the 3-foot cherry tree on her head to stand at a 45-degree angle.

Grand prize winner was stylist Kevin Carter for his “Proud Peacock,” which involved actual feathers to look like the bird itself. And the model of his winning creation was Amaris Brown.

Human Hair is Like Diamonds (Fakes sometimes look better than the real thing)

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

The team at Donna Bella hair extensions had another great show at IBS New York 2008. IBS NY is always a fun show because stylists attend from all over the world. In years past, we’ve noticed a lot of our new stylists come to us with little or no experience with hair extensions. However, due to its popularity, we now notice a lot of stylists are switching to Donna Bella after using other companies products. For marketing purposes we’d love to share the names of companies and reasons/complaints that you divulge to us, but also don’t want to upset anyone. So without mentioning names, we will mention your concerns so others can be on the lookout. Hands down the most common complaint about other hair extension companies is “the poor quality of hair”. With further questioning, we heard:

“A lot of black hair is mixed in with the blonde colors.”

“The hair is very dry and course.”

“The hair is beautiful when I first take it out of the package, but after my client washes their hair a few times, it loses that shine and becomes very dry and frizzy.”

“The hair quickly becomes a tangled mess, even when cared for properly.”

Unfortunately at hair shows, companies can and in some cases will tell you whatever they want just to get a sale. Keep in mind, exhibiting at these shows is very expensive, so can you blame them for trying to sell as much as possible? I say YES, if they’re lying to you. So how do you protect yourself from making the mistake of investing a lot of money toward a new hair extension system, only to find out how bad the quality is? I wish there was some easy trick to it all, but there’s not. Human hair is a lot like diamonds. To the untrained eye, a fake can sometimes look even better than the real thing.

Be weary when companies start throwing around phrases like “remy, virgin, European, Indian, cuticle” etc. Before going to a show, I would suggest that you jump online and do some research. Also try and find out how many years a company has been attending the show. Usually the small guys that throw a company together, just to make a buck, don’t and can’t keep coming back. Some of the major players that have been at this for many years are: Great Lengths, Hair Dreams, Socap, Cinderella and HairLocs.

We’re not afraid to list these companies because we believe in friendly competition. All of these companies have done good things for the progression of our industry. We encourage you to also look at our competition and make the decision that best suits you. Watch for future posts about some of the complaints that were mentioned above. There are answers and solutions for all of these concerns.

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

It was announced today that Paris Hilton has launched her signature DreamCatchers European hair extensions at the annual Chicago Midwest Beauty Show in Rosemont.

“Hair is such an important part of my everyday life, I wear a different hairstyle everyday, and I want great hair to be easy for everyone,” Hilton said.

DreamCatchers permanent extensions, produced by HairTech International, come in a various textures and colors. DreamCatchers hair extensions are made of virgin (unprocessed) hair, and can be styled, permed or colored. It’s reported that each extension will cost between $8 to $10.
According to HairTech International CEO Chris Volek:

“The extensions are applied in a salon and take about two hours for a full head application – four to six hours less than most other extension processes.”

Paris noted that, after wearing the extensions for a couple months she should tie her name to them:

“It’s something I really believe in,” she cooed. “I want my fans to feel great, to feel sexy.”
