Make-up Trends to Fall For

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

hair-makeup-sirenHad occasion yet this season to do a triple take at that lady passing on the street? It’s not her clothes (although undoubtedly well put together) or the “do” (also most likely stunning), but what makes you crank your neck around in disbelief is the amazingly layered makeup.

Beauty Launchpad magazine is calling these ladies the Sirens of fall - and beware, those Manhattan sidewalks could be a little closer than imagined.

Here’s a clip from Karie L. Frost’s Launchpad article this month on makeup trends for this fall:

Forget Avon calling—the sirens’ call is in full effect for fall’s biggest makeup trends

Don’t be alarmed if your neck feels a bit sore this fall. You are probably suffering from SMW (Siren Makeup Whiplash), a dull pain brought about by the constant double- and triple-takes you instinctively do when spotting a lady all done up in fall’s screen-siren makeup trends. The looks are so willful, so in-your-face, that you can’t help but be drawn to them—repeatedly!

But, beware: Most of the bolder trends center around one feature—the eyes, lips or brows. To blend any two of these scene-stealing trends would be cosmetic blasphemy! We’ve isolated five of the season’s femme-fatale looks and paired them with the freshest fall offerings from cosmetics companies. Add to that the A-list makeup artists’ tips that we’ve included for giving these trends a glam go, and you’ve got sirens calling!

Making Up This Spring

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

Spring Make-up BeautyJust like fashion and hair, makeup changes with the season. Since our furry groundhog friend didn’t see his shadow, technically spring should be right around the corner. Launchpad beauty magazine is offering some timely tips on ‘making-up’ for spring. Here’s a bit of the article by Karie L. Frost:

This spring, beauty is all about clean, healthy skin, multitonal hues and flashes of intense color.

Spring makeup styles naturally tend toward soft-focus looks, with pastel watercolors diffusing over eyelids and pearlescent lip gloss melting over mouths. This year, however, beauty both softens up and intensifies with vivid hues used as sheer washes and loud pops of color highlighting one region of the face. The overall feel is “playful!” says Rudy Miles, Aveda global makeup artist. “This is the main theme running throughout spring, whether you create a literal smoky eye or incorporate a whimsical use of bright colors.”

Burke Daniel, Sebastian Trucco artistic team member, adds, “Advise your clients to pick one spring trend and stick with it.” And Mary Van, president of Mineralogie, takes spring’s typical pretty formula and adds a twist you can share with your clients, saying, “The trend this season is not about wearing a full face of makeup, but rather about having fun with one feature in a playful way.” Master the top four spring makeup trends; become deft at adapting each look to your unique clients. If your client is in search of a playful, new version of herself, this is the season to help her let loose!

Vogue Photo Shoot Helped Cindy Crawford Come To Terms With Her Beauty Spot

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Cindy Crawford owes the editors at fashion bible Vogue for her trademark beauty spot - because she came close to removing it until they decided it was in vogue. Crawford grew up getting teased about the mole, which went on to help turn her into one of the first supermodels.

She considered having it surgically removed after agency bosses suggested it would hinder her career. But when Vogue put her on the cover, blemishes and all, she decided the beauty spot should stay. She recalls, “I think it was still ‘the jury is still out’, until I did my first Vogue cover and when Vogue put me on the cover without re-touching it, and that was like, ‘If it’s good enough for Vogue, it’s good enough for everybody.’”

Now, Crawford accepts her beauty spot is probably more famous than she is. She adds, “I should insure it like people insure their legs.”

Don’t Forget the Vitamins

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

aom_december.jpgWhen we think of skin care, most of us think topical application, toners, scrubs and ex-foliant, and expensive miracle creams that supposedly remove wrinkles. 3oz for 150 bucks…it has to work, right? Well, nutritionalists and doctors are more regularly pointing to vitamins as a source of clean skin and this month’s article by Day Spa Magazine examines just that. Here’s a bit from the article by Andrea Renskoff:

“Using only topical skincare is an idea of the past. If you want to look at the future, you really have to have supplements,” says Dr. Howard Murad, whose Internal Skincare Supplements are a thriving part of his Murad skincare line. “I recommend an inclusive approach using treatments, topicals and nutrition, and the best place to get all three should be at the spa and nowhere else.” As spa professionals seek to help clients with total wellness, adding nutritional supplements to their retail shelves can provide both a strengthened revenue stream and a valuable service.
