The New Finger Trend

We have a new beauty treatment on our hands. Literally. It’s called Minx Nails. Rather than using liquid polish to color your nails, Minx nails uses solid nail coating type stickers. They are heated and then applied to your nail, and last roughly 4 weeks. And the main appeal for this over liquid polish… no chipping! The process is quite simple really:

1. Pick your color

2. Place Minx under heat lamp to make flexible.

3. Re size to fit your nail shape.

4. Use heat lamp to shrink-wrap the Minx covering

5. File to remove excess film.

6. Enjoy!

Hair Extensions in the White House?

Only Michelle Obama’s hair stylist knows this for sure, but we’re of the opinion that the stunning “to be” first lady has a full head of natural hair with no extensions to be found. Tragedy? Hardly. We’re also of the opinion that the future First Lady will do more in the next four years for lady’s fashion than all the first lady’s combined since Jacqueline Kennedy.

One stylist, Yusef Williams of Manhattan’s Paul Labrecque salon, thinks that “Michelle has a lot of full-length hair — no extensions.” Offering his opinion to the checkout stand mag OK!, Williams, who has the honor of being assigned as “a member of Michelle’s hair and makeup team,” predicts that she will change her hairstyle because “that’s the motto: change. Something shorter, layered, fun and one-of-a-kind.”

There you have it – No Extensions in the white house (yet). Maybe we’ll send some samples over to Williams and he can give us a trial run for the inagural?

SPF for your hair?

She Knows author Kori Ellis summarizes the best summer tips for protecting your hair from those harmful (but wonderful) sun rays. From covering with a scarf, to creams and products with spf included, she gives a quick and dirty (dirty is good according to the author) breakdown to summer hair.

19th annual North American Hairdressing Awards (NAHA)

It’s that time of year, when the hair and salon industry’s biggest and best do’s are shown off in Vegas. This year’s award ceremony promises not to dissapoint and the following stylists have been announced. The event will be held at the Mandalay Bay, in Las Vegas Nevada on July 13th.

From all over North America, talented stylists have been selected to compete in 12 categories. There are 60 finalists, entered from over 600 entries, and the judges have admitted that these are some of the best entries to date.

Hair Trends

In a great article over at She Knows, celebrity hair stylist Nick Chavez discusses some of the upcoming summer trends for this summer and beyond.

On current styles that are coming back, Chavez noted “One of the greatest trends that is coming back is the classic styles — the Sophia Loren kind of feeling. The great part of it was that hairstyle was always messy, but now it’s going into a glam-rock kind of thing,” says Chavez. “Mixing rock n’ roll with a couture dress — it’s amazing.”

He also pointed out the frequent use of the classic, and easy going, ponytail, “The easiest thing to do, and the trend is coming back in a big way. For women, time is of the essence. Women barely have time for themselves. You don’t want to be married to your hair, make-up or nails,” Chavez quipped.

Not to be left out of the hair mix, Chavez highlighted the importance of color, and some that we’re now seeing, “You know what? You’re starting see the reds out there. They’re really pretty. Julianne Moore, for one, is just beautiful — her latest color. You’re starting to see those reddish tones within brunettes now, too,” Chavez said.

“It’s a red ginger. It’s got gold highlights,” Chavez said of Ashlee Simpson’s crimson blush. “That is such a pretty color. It’s an easy color for taking a woman from blond to that red because you can always come back to blond easier.”

Launchpad’s Spring Fashion Article

Beauty Launchpad, a respected beauty industry publication, has released their spring fashion article of the month which highlights the organized chaos that seems to be this year’s trend. Perhaps questionably labeled, but appropriate none-the-less, launchpad notes “Style schizophrenia is spring’s new mania.”

Due to the apparent ‘style indecision’ evoked by loud contrasting designs and colors, spring seems hell bent on mixing things up and forcing even the most avant-guard fashionista’s to strut outside of their comfort zones.

The dueling voices in your head create a fashion fracas whenever you poke through your closet. The pull of sublime minimalism dukes it out with the desire for ostentatious ornamentation.
