Extensions And The Sun

February 18th, 2011

DONNA BELLA BUSINESS TIP FOR
February 18, 2011

Question:

I love wearing extensions during the warm summer months and I especially like the look of long hair at the Jersey Shore. My natural hair color lightens dramatically because of lengthy exposure to the sun but the color of my hair extensions don’t fade like my own hair. What is the best way to keep the colors matched?

Karen S. – Wildwood, New Jersey

Answer:

You have a couple of solutions.

Your first choice is to have your stylist create an early summer makeover by coloring you hair the shade that is normal lightens to during the hot summer months. That way, you get the new look immediately.

New color probably means that you will want new extensions. Extensions are usually replaced every three to six months. Schedule new extensions for the entire calendar year so that you get fresh extensions and the appropriate color at the beginning of the warm weather.

The other option may be to double up on your summer color appointments. Keep your hair the same natural color by visiting your beautician more often. That is especially important if you prefer your natural darker shade over the shade that the sun dictates.

Standing For Long Hours

February 17th, 2011

Working while standing all day can create some long-term health problems unless you pace yourself and have the right footwear. Use these six ideas to ensure that you have a long, stress free, and healthy salon career.

Over time, even the healthiest, physically fit stylists start to feel the affects of standing over a chair all day long. You may not feel the pain for a year or two but eventually you may begin to question your ability to maintain your strength over a thirty-year stint.

Here are some tips that will soften the physical strain of standing all day long.

Keep Your Legs Moving
Standing in one place or sitting for long periods inhibit the blood flow to arms, legs, and the brain. In between clients, take a quick stroll through the salon or out the front door and around the parking lot. Ample blood circulation keeps your mind, muscles, and fingertips in tip top shape.

Drink Plenty Of Water
Hydrate your body with lots of water. Talking to customers all-day and working around hot appliances dries out the skin and pulls liquids from the body. Resist the idea that soft drinks, coffee, and energy drinks do as much good as water. If they did, God would have made underground springs taste like 7-up.

Wear Shoes That Feel Great
Find shoes that fit comfortably, don’t pinch, and are not so large that you slide around inside the shoe while moving. Firm soles offer the back support that will get you through a ten-hour workday. Cushy insoles protect your feet from sores and potential blisters.

Take A Break From Standing
If you get a chance, sit down and elevate your feet to relieve tension and pressure on your lower body and skeletal structure. The spine bears the brunt of standing all day. Treat the spine like a great employee. Give your back a well deserved rest, two or three times a day.

Make Bathing A Ritual
A tub full of hot water and herbal salts is one of the best ways for your body to heal on a daily basis and regroup for the coming day. The muscles relax and prepare your mind and body for a guaranteed good night’s sleep. At the salon, a quick ten minute foot bath at lunch will do wonders for your stamina.

Build Your Muscle Strength
Your legs are more important to your career than a sharp pair of scissors or a blow dryer on steroids. Outside of work, do some regular exercises that strengthen your upper leg muscles, calves, and stomach. You will notice an immediate difference in your ability to stand for long periods of time.

Who Invented Hair Extensions?

February 16th, 2011

DONNA BELLA BUSINESS TIP FOR
February 16, 2011

Question:

My friend and I were talking about hair extensions and were wondering where they originated. I think it was India and she guesses that they were first created somewhere on the African continent. Can you settle our friendly dispute?

Pershawn A. – Jennings, Indiana

Answer:

No one seems to be making a claim as to the origin of hair extensions so let’s explain how they came about.

Indian women have a long and established tradition of hair care and lengthy, shinny locks. Many women donate their hair to temples dotted around the country when blessings come to their family. So hair has a sacred origin in that culture.

Likewise, African women have used braids and weaves as a practical way to care for hair and make a statement about their beauty. African braiding has been adopted by many cultures as a fashionable alternative in many local communities. However, neither Indian nor Afro-Caribbean cultures have used extensions as a standard means for lengthening hair. They just let it grow.

It was the Europeans who noticed how women residing between the Tropic of Cancer and The Tropic of Capricorn – that middle part of the planet – created an alluring image using creative braiding, weaving, or silky straight hair.

Europeans from Paris to Prague wanted the same look and the fastest, easiest way to get it was by weaving human hair onto a braid or cornrow. As Europeans found it fashionable, then Americans were only two steps behind in adopting the practice.

The U.S. is now the pacesetter. As with many style trends, North Americans are wearing and promoting hair extensions more than any other continent in the world.

Human Hair Prices Set To Rise

February 15th, 2011

Costs for a variety of commodities are inching their way higher and in the not-to-distant future, sticker shock will be setting in for food, clothing (especially items made of cotton), and of course fuel. Be aware that some changes are coming for human hair extensions as well. How you manage those cost increases will be important in keeping loyal customers.

Of course, human hair is not manufactured like I-Pods or cell phones. There are limited resources for hair. But conditions in the world play an important role in dictating the price of human hair and the extensions that come from that hair. Here is just one example of how that happens. When unrest surfaces in the middle-east, oil prices spike. As oil prices increase, the cost to deliver human hair from India to factories in China jumps as well. And then transportation to the U.S. adds more to the cost of human hair extensions.

Human hair is not something that you should stockpile. That is one of the great advantages of working with Donna Bella Milan. You can have little or no inventory at your salon, and within days, order the exact amount of human hair that you need for your client. That arrangement keeps your cash in the bank and saves you hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year.

Many salons are reluctant to raise prices during economic downturns. When and how to increase prices is a matter of your local economy and clientele. You may want to start mentioning to customers how you’ve been able to hold prices down for three or four years and help your regular clients understand that the prices for your services may increase over the next few months. Every person sitting in your chair, grocery shops, buys gasoline, and will understand your need to bump things up a bit.

Start now, even though prices to you have not yet changed. Small, incremental increases will be less noticeable to your customers. If you get some push-back from your best clients, then consider performing an extra service to make up for the increases. Maybe you could throw in a shampoo as part of the hair extension application. Test the market. Talk to other stylists in your salon, and put together a plan that will keep your customers happy.

Make sure that your skills continue to improve. No one minds paying for a service when the provider is remarkably competent. The client gets what they pay for, so creative styling, color skills, and the finest human hair extensions in the marketplace goes a long way to satisfying a customer.

Be smart about increasing prices. If the salon’s wholesale prices go up 20%, that does not mean that the retail customer prices need to go up 20%. Perhaps all you should do initially is to raise the price of the extension service to cover your addition cost of the hair extensions. You still make the same amount of money as before by passing only the actual increases onto the client. That makes the increase painless for the customer.

Many of your salon products will be increasing in price. Think about where you make your money. Perhaps some of those products should be eliminated or the amount of inventory on-hand reduced. The price of your SERVICE is the key factor during any inflationary cycle. Don’t be afraid to raise prices. If you are as good a stylist as we think you are, then what you charge today or in the future will never be a problem.

Diamond Hair Extensions

February 3rd, 2011

DONNA BELLA BUSINESS TIP FOR
February 3, 2011

Question:

At a trade show in California, I purchased some small diamond-like hair bling that could be taped to long hair for fancy occasions like proms, or weekend parties. As I recall, Donna Bella had these at their booth but I don’t see them on the website. Did I buy them from your company or is my memory slipping?

Carria B. – Baldwin Harbor, California

Answer:

You are absolutely correct. That is our product. These sparkly diamonds known as ICE are a new item that we are testing in tradeshows nationwide to see how popular they will be with stylists.

We refer to the “hair bling” as hair jewels. These preset diamond-like jewels are positioned on strips of tape that can be easily taped onto the hair. The clear tape can be cut and applied anywhere on the hair, including the bangs. ICE diamonds come in clear, blue, or ruby red colors.

ICE hair jewels are a quick and simply way to convert hair extensions or any other hair style into a dress-up night or out on the town event. Order ICE by calling Donna Bella Milan at 888.424.7548.

My Legs, Feet, And Toes Ache

February 1st, 2011

DONNA BELLA BUSINESS TIP FOR
February 1, 2011

Question:

No one in beauty school gave me good advice about the kind of shoes I ought to purchase so that my legs do not ache at the end of the day. The other girls in the shop don’t seem to have problems with any style of shoes. One person actually wears heels from time to time.

Currently, I’m wearing a soft black leather shoe with narrow quarter inch heal. My legs are killing me in my new job. What do most stylists, with my problem do to stop the agony?

Callie, T. – Vancouver, BC, Canada

Answer:

Getting use to standing on hard surfaces is generally worse in the first few weeks of working on your feet. Hopefully, your salon has a cushioned foundation pad around your work station that will help soften the shock to your leg muscles. If not, consider buying your own cushioned mat.

As for shoes, here is the easiest guideline to follow.

If you stand for long hours, wear firm sole shoes with cushy in-soles. Clog-type shoes are preferred by many stylists. Upon finding a perfect fit, purchase two identical pairs of shoes, and trade off wearing them every other day so that the shoes get a chance to breath and readjust to your feet.

Surprise Your Love With Extensions

January 28th, 2011

We have always known that “variety is the spice of life” and there is no better way to spice up a romantic weekend than to surprise your partner with long, flowing, seductive hair extensions.

Too many relationships get caught in the same old, same old rut. If familiarity breeds contempt, then we ought to go out of our way to create a refreshing new look from time-to-time that keeps our closest relationships vibrant and sexy.

One good way to do that is to surprise your partner with a romantic getaway that you have planned well in advance. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive to ensure an adventurous, seductive evening. Perhaps it could be as simple as arranging for a quiet table in the corner of an intimate low-lit dinning room, or wearing a dress that tells your companion that you made a special effort to look great.

Between, location, apparel, perfume, make-up, and music, you can create a memorable occasion that will bring your relationship to new heights.

If you really want to get someone’s heart pounding (or resuscitated), then visit your stylist for a hair extension makeover.

Seeing you in new long-flowing extensions will light a fire in the heart of your partner. Sure it’s the same lovable you, but you get to remind him that you are special now, have always been special, and will be special for years to come. If you look great, it makes your man look great! When you look beautiful, it reminds him of why he fell head-over-heels in love with you.

Try it for a weekend and test the results.

A weekend? Wouldn’t hair extensions for a weekend cost a small fortune? Absolutely not, if you ask your stylist to sell you some clip-ins or if you purchase human hair clips from your local beauty distributor. Clip-in hair is an inexpensive way get the sparks flying again. If you have no local source for clip-in human hair, then call our customer service department at Donna Bella and buy direct from the company.

Clip-in hair extensions are easy to apply by yourself or have a friend help with the installation. Clip-ins can be attached in such a short period of time that your spouse will think you have a complete makeover team hidden in your clothes closet. You will amaze him. You will overwhelm him. You will bedazzle him with your new look.

If the clips work the way I think they will work, then consider permanent hair extensions that will keep the momentum going for three to six months longer. Why not turn one miracle weekend into six months of romantic bliss?

DONNA BELLA BUSINESS TIP FOR

Are Trade Shows Worth My Time?

January 24th, 2011

The salon and beauty industry is constantly changing and there is no better way for you to keep up with innovation than to attend a national or regional trade show. Trade shows give you a professional shot-in-the-arm and reenergize your connection to the beauty industry.

For those of you who have never lived near or traveled to a large beauty event, you are in for a real treat. Take a camera to record your impressions. The color, sound, and human energy pulsates up and down every isle of the show. It’s an educational extravaganza on steroids.

The big question for most stylists is how do I justify the expense and time away from the salon. Each day that I’m gone means less money in my pocket and more work when I get back home. Who will watch the children? Where will I stay? What will I learn? Am I wasting my time?

Going to trade shows is your best method for continuous, up-to-date education. Accountants, lawyers, programmers, and a thousand other professions have a need for continuous education, why not our industry? To get the most from your experience, try these five ideas for visiting trade shows.

One – Plan Well In Advance
Make all of your travel arrangements early so that you get the best deals on hotels and airfare. Search the Internet for Priceline deals or locate small boutique hotels that are within walking distance of the convention center venue. Save your money in advance of the show so that you aren’t using credit to fund the experience.

Two – Act Like You Are A Reporter
Attend a show with the mindset that you are there to learn, learn, learn. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions when speaking with manufacturers reps and other stylists. Look for demonstrations and be willing to take a lot of notes. Put a star by things you write down that could be helpful to your business and interesting to your customers.

Three – Take A Camera and Keep Snapping
Use the show for marketing. Call some of your best customers while attending the show and tell them that you noticed a new look or thought of an idea that they may want to try. They will love the fact that you remembered them while attending a national event. Email customers and co-workers a photo or two to help them feel part of your experience.

Four – Be Wise About Tradeshow Specials
Most manufacturers offer tradeshow specials and some will extend those specials to you beyond the trade show dates. On the first day of the show, take a quick spin around the trade show floor to get a feel for the type of products and education that is available. Don’t be too quick to spend your money on products that you see the very first day. Jot down booth numbers that you would like to revisit.

Five – Evaluate Your Experience
After the dust settles and you are back home again, make some notes in a trade show journal about what you might do differently if given a chance. By thinking through the best and worst of the show, you’ll be better prepared for next year’s gathering. Try flying to different cities each year to compare the “personality” of that show and that region of the country.

Check out our post titled “Must Attend Trade Shows” dated 01/25/11 for the months and cities of the industry’s best events.
