My First Experience with Donna Bella Hair

January 21st, 2011

“Just try it one time, just try it on one client and you will be hooked!”

This is the advice I received from a good friend who uses the Donna Bella line. I trust her opinion.

I was quite tired of the “challenges” I was facing with  the hair, tools, and beads I was currently using so, I was ready for a change. I borrowed her tools and a few packages of hair.

I offered to apply them free to one of my best clients, all the while explaining that this was a new product to me and I had no experience with it. How could she refuse?

I was amazed at how sturdy and comfortable the bead tool felt in my hands. I didn’t have to stop and “get a better grip”. The beads closed with ease and held tight. Did I mention I fell in love with the Quick Pick Hair Parter? How did I ever go this long without it?

My client loved the quality of the hair (and so did I), she called me a few weeks later to say she had not lost a single tip and they were staying in so tight! She was quite the advertiser for me as she had spoke so highly of her experience that she had surely raised the bar!!

In all I must say I bought my friends extra tools without hesitation and started using Bella Donna solely! I was sold at first application and I can say the same for every client of mine that wears them!!

Extensions For Thinning Hair

January 20th, 2011

DONNA BELLA BUSINESS TIP FOR
January 20, 2011

Question:

A few of my clients have thinning hair and are interested in hair extensions to create greater volume and length.  No one wants a wig. Which hair extension application method would be best for these customers?

Rochelle M. – Rock Springs, Wyoming

Answer:

Often times, thinning hair first becomes noticeable on the sides, near the temples, and eventually thinning takes place around the crown of the head.

With Donna Bella you have four choices of application methods – micro bead, fusion, tape-in, and clip-in. Which works best depends upon the condition of the hair. Sometimes a combination of methods works best for thin hair.

For example, many stylists use the fusion method above the temple and forward of the ear because a bonded tip is less obvious than a micro bead in that area of the head. In that case, fusion tips are used on the side and beads are loaded onto the back of the head.

Clip in extensions work well near the crown and back of the head because they cause no damage to the hair and keep the weight of the extension to a minimum. So in that case, perhaps a combination of clip-in and fusion would be successful.

Overall, bonded (fusion) and tape-in extensions are your best bet. Use tape-in rather than fusion if you the hair is weak and may be damaged when extensions are removed.

Inspire Yourself

January 19th, 2011

As a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City long before shows about makeovers, fashion, and celebrity styles appeared on television, I was taught to stretch my imagination by using all that I saw around me as a source of creative inspiration.  Walking down a city street could reveal the perfect shade of “putty grey” in a piece of gum stuck to the sidewalk or the next silhouette for a ball gown in the oddly shaped shadow against a building.   People-watching was  great for spotting reverse trends, and of course, the reading of magazines and industry trade publications was also encouraged as a way of keeping up with what was going down the runways as well as going on in the business.

Years later as a student of cosmetology, I learned that the same techniques I used to inspire myself as a student of fashion also applied to hair design.  Hair is after all, a huge part of the fashion landscape.

Ideas, talent and hard-work go hand- in hand- in hand with creating beautiful and interesting designs.  But transforming those designs, whether they are fashion related or hair & beauty related into profits, requires a working knowledge of what is currently happening in your market and a feeling of what is going to be happening next.  And, in my opinion, it has never been easier to follow fashion than it is today with all of the new outlets of information available.

Take television for example.  Shows like “What Not To Wear”, or “Fashion Police” are a great sources of fashion reporting.  These shows not only report- they critique as well.  But remember, you don’t have to agree with the critics.  As you’re listening to what the reporters have to say, form your own opinions as well.  Do you really like Anne Hathaway’s dress?  What about Angelina’s hair, or Nicole Kidman’s jewelry?  Think about why you did, and think about why you didn’t.  Then, try to articulate your positions either way.  Don’t just form an opinion, practice backing it up with substantial comments that add to your case for or against something.

My friends and I actually talk back to the hosts while watching these types of shows.  Or I may actually elaborate on a comment that has been made as though I am actually a part of their conversation.  Such as what Kelly Osbourne said about Christina Aguilara’s hair on a recent episode of   “Fashion Police”.

Kelly said that she really liked Christina’s new hair extensions because Christina didn’t usually have the best ones and that it was nice to see her with good hair for a change. To which I replied, “Ouch!  What a backhanded compliment.”  Aside from that however, I the stylist, thought, “when I do hair extensions on a client, my goal is to make the extensions look exactly like natural hair.”  Most of the clients in my practice don’t want anyone to know that they are wearing extensions.  If someone could tell they are extensions, then I believe that I have failed as a stylist, no matter how high quality the hair used may be.  This was information that I could take back to the salon.

Personally, I think Christina was wearing a wig, and I hate when people call wigs or “clip-ins” extensions.  Wigs are wigs, clip-ins are hair pieces, and wefts are weaves.  In my opinion, because of the intensity of the labor and the technical skill required, only strand- by- strand methods of hair application should be called extensions. (I don’t mean to take away from the skills required to perform the other methods of hair supplementation, because they are valid methods, just not the same as strand-by-strand.)   But that’s neither here nor there.  The point is that Christina was “ousted” on national television for having fake hair, yet almost every other celebrity on the red carpet also had hair extensions (good ones) yet no mention was made of that.

Note to self:  During consultations, make sure to point out all the celebrity extensions to my clients when the pictures appear in magazines.  The “natural” look of these hairstyles should close many deals for me. If I did my homework correctly… Ka-ching!   Ka-ching!

Most clients will ask for hairstyles that are currently “in” and will expect their stylists to know what they are.   By using available resources you can cite examples of those styles, thereby reassuring your client that you know what they want.  What will set you apart from your peers in the salon is to be able to tell clients about what they will want next.  And that will come from your knowledge of what is going on in your industry.  The confidence you exude as a trend spotter will raise your status in the eyes of the clients, to that of a fashion insider.  And everyone wants to know someone on “the inside”.

Stylists Get Gas!

January 18th, 2011

Stylists throw money at the Internal Revenue Service as if the IRS was a long lost relative that comes begging for assistance each year. It’s crazy!

If you had a few hundred dollars set aside at the end of the year, and wanted to give it away, would the IRS be your first choice? Absolutely not. So let’s look at one business expense that will put hundreds of extra dollars in your pocket each year.

Let’s talk about Business Mileage. Yes, letting Uncle Sam pay for filling up your gas tank and getting you around town. This is what the Internal Revenue Service is currently willing to do.

The U.S. government will allow business owners (that’s you, if you are an independent stylist and not a salaried employee of a salon), to use your car, van, or pickup truck mileage as a legitimate business deduction.

The most recent rules allow for:

50 cents per mile deduction for business miles driven.
16.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

Keep in mind that the standard mileage rate cannot be used for any vehicle used for hire. For example, if you travel to a Beauty Trade Show and rent a car, you cannot deduct your “mileage” for the car rental. However, you may deduct the price of the rental car and the exact cost of the gasoline as a business expense.

Stylists leave so much mileage money on the table because they have no system to document their mileage. A simple mileage journal will keep everything in order and support your claims to the IRS.

This is what your mileage journal should briefly include;
Date -
Beginning odometer reading -
Ending odometer reading -
Purpose for travel -
Person who you met with -
Things you discussed -

So what are legitimate mileage expenses? Here are some examples.

You drive 3.5 miles to a friend’s house to discuss the cost of new extensions.
You drive 11 miles to a beauty supply store to purchase hair conditioner.
You drive 2 miles to lunch to talk with a friend about how to promote extensions in the high school where she teaches.
You drive 270 miles to a trade show.
You drive 87 miles to a relative’s home so you can demonstrate to her church group how extensions are applied.
You drive 1 mile to the post office to mail your credit card bill for hair extension supplies.

Get creative and write down every mile that you travel to promote and manage your business. Make sure that mileage expenses are legit.

Will taking the time to keep track of your expenses make a difference? Consider this. If you drove just 2,000 business miles for the year, you could deduct 50 cents per mile and receive a $1,000.00 business deduction. If your tax bracket is 20%, you would put an extra $200.00 in your pocket that year rather than paying it to Uncle Sam.

Now that’s a lot of free gas!

Note: Always check with your tax advisor or the IRS to determine current rules and regulations regarding mileage deductions.

Stylists Budget With Tough Love

January 17th, 2011

Stylists have soft hearts and helping hands. It’s part of what makes the beauty business so enjoyable. But when it comes to business budgeting you have to use tough love to make sure that you reach your financial goals. With a well thought out budget, your business will thrive and heal from the bumps and bruises of economic downturns.

Every stylist should have two working documents; a business plan and a budget. A business plan is like a road map. It explains where you want to go and how you are going to get there. A budget is more like the vehicle that will take you to your destination. Without a stable, working, budget everything starts to fall apart.

Budgets ought to be somewhat flexible to begin with because you are designing a model that will be used in the future. Once tested, budgets should be strictly followed through disciplined spending and planned growth.

Here are a couple of things to think about as you plan a new budget.

Determine How Much You Want Your Income to Grow And How You’ll Meet Your Yearly Goals.

If your total income is $60,000 and your expenses $20,000, you made $40,000. If you want your net income to be $50,000 next year, how much should your total income be and how much should you plan for expenses? When you figure that out, that’s your new budget. Now all you need is a strategy to add more customers, increase your fees, or focus on the services that generate the most money.

Experiment With Your First Budget For Three Months And Find The Best Formula For Making Money.

Tip #1 – Budgeting takes practice. A budget is a lot like a good recipe, you have to make some adjustments to the ingredients until you find the perfect combination. Keep your expenses in check and be disciplined about how much you spend. If you don’t really need something, don’t buy it.

Test your advertising ideas and keep promoting your business with ideas that get immediate results. Once you see that a specific idea works, you can take more money from your budget to expand what is working.

Tip #2 – Don’t make emotional decisions, make sensible business decisions. Buy equipment that will save you time and cut your costs. Poor equipment purchases can eat up your budget very quickly. Get advice from other stylists or online websites prior to spending your hard-earned money.

Dealing with Fine, Thin and Straight Hair!

January 14th, 2011

Fine, thin, straight hair, yes these words unfortunately cover the basics of what I deal with everyday. I used to be so frustrated because I just did not know where to begin. I wanted the voluminous sexy curls the Kardashians rocked, well I figured out not only how to get those sexy curls, but how to get them to last.

Take your shower at night, shampoo your hair, and use light conditioner on the ends.

Blow out your hair 75% dry, then sleep on it.

You will wake up with a little kink here and there.

Then put your hair into a tight messy messy bun.

Wear that for about 2-3 hours, or as long as you can until you need your curly look.

When you take out your messy bun, do not brush it. Simply spray in some working hair spray (this is the wet kind), and section your hair into small sections starting in the back and curl everything.

After you pull your hair out of the curling iron, cool down the curl by squeezing it with your hand.

After you have curled all your hair, DO NOT TOUCH IT. Spray it with some aerosol hairspray and let it set. The longer is sets, the longer it lasts!

Right before you are ready to head out run your finger through it and tease the crown area just a little for a little height.

Another little spritz of hairspray and you have got sexy glamorous curls that will last all night long!

“Sectioning” Makes For Easy Applications

January 13th, 2011

DONNA BELLA BUSINESS TIP FOR
January 13, 2011

Question:

I am getting good at applying the actual hair extensions but struggle organizing the hair in orderly sections at the beginning of the process. I really don’t understand how to get the hair out of the way for easier handling and how to divide the work area on the back of the head.

Jafra, T. – Madison, Wisconsin

Answer:

You are asking about “sectioning the hair”. To section properly, all you need is a rat tail comb an some large clips.

Diagonally, divide the clients hair into two equal halves right down the middle of the head. Then use a rat tail comb to part the hair from ear to ear, just below the oxcipital bone. Using the large clips, clip the sectioned hair on one side of the head, onto the top of the head. Then section the other side of the head and clip the hair up-top.

Make sure that the clipped hair is secure and the horizontal part is as straight as possible.

So that your client can wear her hair up or in a ponytail, do not apply extensions to the nap area or lower back of the head, below the horizontal part. Extensions are never applied in that part of the head. Check out our YouTube video titled “Install Donna Bella Milan Hair Extensions” to see how sectioning is made easy.

Consultations Work Wonders

January 12th, 2011

Expectations will make or break your professional career. Exceed your client’s expectations and you have a customer for life. And if you want to guarantee a happy ending for every new hair extension customer, be sure to begin with a well designed consultation.

Hair extension consultations should be a planned, step-by-step conversation. Think of the last time you went to the doctor. Someone, perhaps a physician’s assistant, sat you down and asked you a series of questions about your current condition. Your interview with clients should get to the heart of what the client wants to achieve by getting hair extensions and will explain the process of getting extensions.

Here is a checklist that you might consider using when you sit down for a consultation.

Q & A
Why do you want hair extensions?
Do you have friends who have hair extensions?
How long do you expect that you will wear hair extensions?
How often do you currently wash and condition your hair?
Are you prepared to spend addition time caring for the extensions?
Do you know about Remy quality hair extensions?
Which application system works best for you? Bead, Fusion, Both?
What questions do you have about getting extensions?
What questions do you have about caring for extensions?

Determine The Following
Preferred application process.
Desired length.
Additional volume or thickness.
Extension colors, highlights, or lowlights (see Donna Bella color ring)
Additional hair color needed.
Additional cut or curl needed.
Number of packs of hair needed.
Approximate time it will take for the hair to arrive.
Approximate time it will take to apply the hair.
Number of follow-up appointments or adjustments.
Approximate cost for hair extension service.

Actions
Set an appointment with adequate time so that no one is rushed.
Make sure that the appointment date leaves plenty of time for the hair to arrive.
Get a deposit for half the cost of the service.
Order the hair from Donna Bella Milan and specify the appointment date.
Provide written guidelines for how to best care for hair extensions.

Going through a checklist with every new extension customer will ensure that there are no misunderstandings about what the service includes. Consultations are especially helpful when it comes to putting a high dollar value on the service and your expertise. A good consultation will remove any surprises when it comes to your customer paying the bill.

Good consultations simply work wonders!
