Hair Fusion Tips for the New Year

Hair Fusion Tips for the New Year

Hair fusion–or what we like to call Kera-Link extensions–can be a bit daunting to the uninitiated. As one of our most distinguished and enduring methods, Kera-Link requires precision, confidence, and expertise for optimal effects. In other words, there’s little room to make mistakes! That being said, hair fusion doesn’t have to be difficult. If you’re not already a fusion stylist, make it a mission to master this technique in the new year so you can bring even more hair extension clients into your salon. Here are some tips to make the installation process as easy as possible, as recommended by expert hair extension stylist Baelee Reiter.

Don’t skip the prep work.

Hair fusion installations are lengthy, but you can trim down the time. Do part of the work in advance by setting up your station with all the tools you need for the undertaking. This could involve pre-cutting the fusion extensions into Micro Bonds, or pre-arranging the strands into the Strand Organizer according to color. You can even cut half of the keratin bond off of the extension to make the bond less bulky when installed, and to make it easier to remove. And don’t forget to plug in your Melting Connector a few minutes before the client arrives so that it’s ready for installation right away!

Clean as you go.

The keratin from hair fusion installations can get messy if you’re not careful, so clean your tools as you go to prevent buildup. Keep a dry paper towel next to your station so that when the Melting Connector starts to get a bit grimy, you can clamp it against the paper towel and pull the excess keratin off. Similarly, once you’ve completed a full row of hair extensions, use the Hair Extension Brush to brush out any lingering keratin residue.

Lighten your load.

We’ve designed the Connector Belt to hold your hot Melting Connector while you work. Simply fasten the Connector Belt around your waist and slip the Melting Connector into the heatsafe pocket when you’re not using it. This will keep your hands free for parting hair and rolling bonds, and prevent you from having to constantly pick up your Melting Connector after you’ve put it down.

Perfect your technique.

The best way to make your hair fusion installations as fast and easy as possible is to master your technique. That means knowing how to establish tidy parts with no fly away hairs, how to space the extensions across each row, how to roll a proper hair fusion bond, and how to stay organized throughout the entire installation. This knowledge will prevent needless mistakes and inevitable corrections that can take up time and energy (not to mention money). Master your technique today by enrolling in our Online Education course, signing up for a Pro Series event, joining us at a Trade Show, or watching some instructive YouTube videos on our channel. Fresh Holiday Looks with Clip-In Hair Extensions

Fresh Holiday Looks with Clip-In Hair Extensions

The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to blend classic looks with new trends, and our Clip-In hair extensions are here to help you do just that. They’re simple, adjustable, and can give you the volume and length you need for a perfect holiday hairdo. Try on any of these fresh seasonal looks with human hair Clip-ins, and see what we mean when we say, “It’s a snap!”

Updo with a Twist

This take on a traditional updo involves adding some extra flair via a feather (as pictured), barrette, headscarf, or other accessory. Throw some Clip-In hair extensions into the mix to create a fuller look, or to add a pop of color for a photo-ready finish.

Braid Band

Create a dynamic look by varying hair texture from roots to ends. This version of the classic half-up/half-down style features a neat, braided partition between smooth hair on top and curled hair below. Just section off hair at the front of your head (around your face), twist it into braids, and pull the braids taut ‘round the back of your head and secure. You can add Clip-In hair extensions either to the braids themselves or to the loose hair underneath, situating the braids over the clips to hide them.

Bubble Pony

Why don the same old ponytail this season when you can elevate it to a more fashionable look? Channel Disney’s Princess Jasmine for the holidays by recreating her iconic bubble pony! A couple of human hair Clip-Ins installed throughout your hair will give you plenty of material to feather out into those gorgeous, perfect bubbles.

Easy Length

Sometimes all you need to add some freshness to your look is a new part, some hair bling, and a bit of extra thickness and length. Let your hair hang loose and natural, installing a pack of Clip-In hair extensions–or even a crown extension–for that extra oomph to complement your holiday vibe.

Donna Bella’s Clip-In hair extensions come in 100% Human Original, 100% Human Premium, and synthetic varieties, plus full-head and single-strand options and a range of lengths and thickness grades. Gift them to a friend–or to yourself–this holiday season! Read more about Clip-In hair extensions in this Hairline blog, or see more examples of festive hairdos on our Pinterest boards.

The What’s What of Fusion Extension Installation Tools

The What’s What of Fusion Extension Installation Tools

Kera-Link hair extensions–otherwise known as fusion hair extensions–are an enduring client favorite. Although the extensions themselves are sturdy and long-lasting, the installation process is easy, speedy, and efficient with the right tools in hand. So if you’re not offering this service in your salon yet, it’s time to get on it! And if you are, read on to make sure you know the what’s what of fusion hair extension tools–there are some new additions you won’t want to miss!

Cordless Melting Connector

As an upgrade to our classic Melting Connector, the Cordless Melting Connector enables you to move freely around your installation area, so you can focus on those fusion hair extension placements instead of wrestling with cords.

Connector Belt

Store your heated Cordless Melting Connector in the chic and heat-safe silicone Connector Belt while you work. The Connector Belt sits comfortably and snugly at your waist to free up your hands for rolling those fresh fusion bonds. It is available in pink or black color varieties.

Velcro Hair Grippers

Achieve the perfect part line with Velcro Hair Grippers! All you have to do is smooth down stray hairs with one hand and lay down the Velcro Hair Gripper with the other, fastening those hairs in place. Makes for clean, pain-free fusion extension attachments!

Keratin Bond Cutters

For those of you who like to customize your fusion bonds, Keratin Bond Cutters are a must-have. They enable you to tailor the size of the fusion extension attachment to the client’s hair–a versatile technique we call Micro Bonding. Simply cut the keratin bond parallel to the hair shaft (without snipping all the way through!), then tear the remaining corner of the bond with your hands to separate the strand into two parts. These Small fusion extensions allow you to install in the more exposed parts of the client’s hair–like the hairline or horseshoe–and to achieve delicate end results.

Keratin Cleaning Kit

Complete your fusion extension installation with a thorough tool cleanup using the Keratin Cleaning Kit. Simply spritz the Keratin Cleaning Solution onto the Microfiber Cloth and rub over dirty spots on your Melting Connector or other tools (make sure that all tools are off and cool!). Once keratin residue is removed, wash the solution off with soap and water. Also includes a Melting Connector storage bag!

Pick up these tools at the Donna Bella online store today! You can also get the fundamental fusion hair extension tools in the Donna Bella Kera-Link Starter Kit. Read more about our Starter Kits in this blog.

Real Hair Extension Essentials for Holiday Travel

Sunday, December 3rd, 2017

Taking care of real hair extensions while you travel doesn’t have to be difficult. With the right products and instructions, you can don your best hair everywhere. Here is Donna Bella’s list of recommended travel tools, designed for ultra-portability and easy maintenance.

Hair Travel Kit

Cover all your hair care bases with the Hair Travel Kit from our Remy Care line! Complete with TSA-compliant bottles of Argan Oil, KeraExtend Serum, KeraExtend Conditioner, and KeraExtend Shampoo for hair extensions, this kit ensures you can ditch those low-grade hotel products for good!

Hair Extension Brush

Our 100% boar hair bristle brush is specifically designed for 100% Human Remy, real hair extensions. Unlike generic brushes, this Hair Extension Brush will glide seamlessly over your extension bonds, gently untangling knots while pulling the natural oils from your scalp down through the lengths of your hair. Stock up on a couple of them to make sure you always have one handy–including one for your carry-on luggage to cover those in-flight touch-ups!

Dry Shampoo

Keep your hair and hair extensions looking clean and smelling fresh with dry shampoo! Perfect for hectic holiday travel, dry shampoo takes the place of a conventional shower, helping you keep your hair extensions hydrated through the season. All you have to do is spray it through your roots and tousle your hair to help it set. You can also apply it before bed to naturally style your hair, waking up with beautifully wavy tresses without almost any effort!

Just like your own hair, real hair extensions need soft hair ties to prevent needless breakage. Carry a pack of Twisties with you on your holiday travels so you can pull your hair back quickly and safely wherever you go. Best part is, they leave no lines or crimps in your hair! Twisties come in pink, black, brown, or clear to match any festive attire.

100% Human Single Clip-Ins

If you’re a wearer of semi-permanent, real hair extensions, you may find that every now and then a strand or weft falls out due to natural hair shedding. Make sure this doesn’t get in the way of any holiday hairdos by bringing some emergency 100% Human Single Clip-Ins to replace any lost locks. Make sure to hold onto those semi-permanent pieces, too, so you can have them re-installed once you return home.

The Sono Trio

If you wear Ready-to-Wear extensions regularly and choose to bring them with you on holiday, make sure you’ve got a Sono Extension Hanger, Sono Sleeve, and Sono Extension Brush packed in your luggage to properly care for your hair. These products will keep your real hair extensions clean, organized, and smooth straight through to the New Year (and beyond!).

How To: Cost-Effective Holiday Pampering

Sunday, November 26th, 2017

It’s the holiday season! That means it’s time to start giving and receiving gifts, enjoying little guiltless indulgences, and spreading cheer from home to work and everywhere in-between. For those of you who are eager to jump straight into the festivities but don’t quite know where to start, think about focusing first on one of the places where you spend so much of your time: the salon. How can you make your salon a seasonal destination this year? If you remember last week’s blog post, the answer should be clear; we’re talking about some good and righteous pampering. Of course, pampering doesn’t need to be super-expensive or over-the-top. As with most matters of quality, it’s all in the details. So today, we’re going to share some of our favorite tips for implementing top-notch and cost-effective pampering techniques in your salon.

Ambient Music

Ambient music–or ambient sound–is intensely relaxing. It eases the pressure to hold up a conversation and gives your client something pleasurable to do with their senses. To achieve this particular state of floaty inattention, we recommend music that is purely instrumental, or noise that simulates the sounds of nature. Lyrical music–unless performed in a foreign language that the client doesn’t understand–may encourage them to focus on the words being sung instead of on the feeling of relaxation itself. So while it may be tempting to play Christmas tunes on repeat, opt for some gentle instrumental renditions, instead.

Refreshing Aroma

Like ambient music, pleasant scents can also inspire relaxation. A little bit of scent diffused into the air can improve your client’s mood and instill a sense of calm. Scent is also closely linked to memory, so a distinct scent in your salon might make it more memorable to your customers. For the holidays, go for something cinnamony and warm.

Comfortable Seating

Make all the seating areas in your salon as comfortable as possible so that your client isn’t forced to pay attention to her posture, or compelled to constantly adjust her position. If possible, invest in a couple of extra pillows or cushions (you can find some affordable pieces at thrift shops, craft stores, and even on Etsy). Again, the goal is to make your client feel utterly relaxed.

Complimentary Beverage

It’s nice to receive some perks for free, and a complimentary beverage is a simple but effective way of giving your clients just that. For something inexpensive but delightful, consider sparkling water with a little bit of honey and lemon juice, and pick up a couple of nice glasses (even champagne flutes, if you so desire!) to add a sophisticated touch. Or go for hot chocolate if it’s cold outside!

Warm (or Chilled) Face Towel

Depending on the season and your salon’s indoor air temperature, you may elect to offer your client a warmed or chilled face towel that they can wear during the washing portion of your service. Steam and chilliness both increase circulation to the face, and each one can help to relax the muscles–particularly those around the delicate eye area. Lighter-feeling eyes are an instant pick-me-up that’ll leave your client feeling rejuvenated.

Samples as Gifts

Once everything is complete and your client is fresh and new and ready to go, offer a sample or two as a parting gift to thank them for their business. It’s a really simple gesture that can have a profound effect on your client and their perception of your business. Plus, if you already included some of the other suggestions from this list, the gift can be the final touch that seals the experience in their mind.

What do you do in your salon to pamper your clients without much extra cost? Let us know in the comments below, and we may feature your advice in a future post!

A Donna Bella Thanksgiving

Monday, November 20th, 2017

Thanksgiving is only a couple of days away, and many of us are likely getting ready to travel back home in order to be with friends and family for the holiday. Even though there’s a lot to be thankful for, sometimes it’s hard not to let the stress of the preparations rain on our gratitude parade. Our advice? Take the time to pamper yourself this Thanksgiving season, because a little self-directed gratitude can make you better able to share your appreciation for others, too! Here are a couple of ways you can treat yourself right now.

Deep Breaths

Breath is something we almost always take for granted, but it feels so good to take a couple of moments and really focus on breathing fully and deeply. It’s like pressing a reset button on your body, and you’ll return to your day feeling calm and revitalized–a much better outlook for tackling the holidays!

Full-Body Stretches

If you’re like most people in North America, you’re carrying stress and tension in your body 24/7, and the only reason why you don’t notice it is because you’ve gotten used to it. Think about your jaw for a second. Is it relaxed, or is it clenched? How about your forehead? Your shoulders? A full-body stretch routine is heavenly, and you can find a load of them online!

Quality Snuggling

Lasso one of your nearest and dearest–be they a partner, parent, child, sibling, friend, pet…whatever–and engage in some uninterrupted, mutually-beneficial snuggling. Physical contact is a crazy-effective pick-me-up, and comfy too!

Glamming Up

Here at Donna Bella, we firmly believe that the way you dress (and express!) yourself sets the stage for how you feel about yourself. So, by that logic, one great way to pamper yourself right now is to pretty yourself up like you’re about to attend some big event. Of course, you don’t actually need to have an event lined up–personal time can be an event in itself, like a way of demonstrating that you’re always worthy of wearing those fancy earrings or those only-on-occasion shoes. Donna Bella extensions are a great way of installing some glam into your everyday life, and you’ll carry the resulting confidence and satisfaction with you everywhere you go.

Thinking Ahead

Anticipation is super motivating, and we have some big deals coming up that you can start looking forward to right now! Get ready for Donna Bella’s upcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday events by downloading our mobile app, subscribing to mobile rewards, and following us on social media so you can be included in all of our social rewards. If you want to be extra prepared, you can also start researching the products you want to purchase in advance, then add them to your shopping cart before the event so you can proceed immediately to checkout once it starts! It’ll be the perfect time to invest in yourself and your business (at a discount!).

We’re ramping up for a whole holiday season of pampering–from Thanksgiving, to Black Friday, and right through to the end of the year (and the beginning of the New Year, too). We hope you’ll check in often and join us for the ride! Thank you for being a Donna Bella reader, customer, and/or stylist! We appreciate you and all that you do!

Holiday Looks–2017 Edition

Sunday, November 12th, 2017

Thanksgiving is the unofficial start-date for the “Holiday Season”–in our book, anyway. To that end, we’re starting to get our winter ensembles ready, and looking up all the festive hairstyles that we’ll be wearing for the rest of the year. Take a look at some of our favorites below, and feel free to suggest your own in the comments section!

Old Hollywood

An undying classic, Old Hollywood waves are the epitome of glamor, and they’re perfectly suited to a season filled with sparkles and twinkling lights. Go all-out with a voluminous head of hair extensions arranged in this style…you may even find your hair more enjoyable than your gifts!

Natural Waves

If your hair is naturally wavy, embrace it! This subtle, tousled look is undeniably charming, and it pairs beautifully with cozy sweaters, fuzzy socks, and all the seasonal glitz.

Big, Bouncy Curls

Consider this Old Hollywood’s casual cousin. Find the sweet spot between classy and comfortable with big, bouncy, un-fussy curls, and you’re sure to have a handle on any party dress code this season.

Silky Straight

On the sleeker side, long, straight locks mesh well with basically any occasion, and will lend a polished-yet-minimal touch that can balance out a more lavish outfit.

Half-Up Twist

Strike an easy balance between classy and effortless with a simple half-up twist that still manages to look done-up. A versatile choice, this style can transition from formal to familiar with just a wardrobe change.

Fancy Barrettes

For those of you who love a good accessory, opt for an ornate or decorative barrette that you can wear in any number of different arrangements. Dressed up or dressed down, the barrette will keep your hair in style and in check throughout the celebrations–and it’ll complement the ornaments in your home, as well!

Why Do Clients Love Kera-Link?

Sunday, November 5th, 2017

This month we’re paying our respects to Kera-Link extensions, one of our premier professional hair extension methods. As part of the feature, we wanted to take a special look at the qualities of the product that make it so well-loved. So without further ado, here are a couple of Kera-Link quirks that make people go ker-azy for them.

Traditional and well-regarded

Of all of our hair extension methods, Kera-Link (or the “fusion” method) has been around the longest. When people think of hair extensions, Kera-Link has the most long-standing reputation. It feels familiar, and is one of the most popular options to date.

Kera-Link/fusion extensions are supremely durable. While other hair extension methods can be just as durable as fusion (lasting, on average, 6-7 weeks before move-up), there is definitely something extra-comforting about the security of an extension fused directly with your hair. This is particularly true when you remember that keratin bonds–the protein tips that are melted under heat against the client’s hair–are made from the same kind of protein as the hair itself, making the extension look and feel basically indistinguishable from the client’s own hair.

One notable benefit of the Kera-Link method is that the bonds are unobtrusive and blend naturally with the client’s hair, so caring for the extensions can be a bit more comfortable than it is for other methods. Unless you’re using an appropriate, hair extension-friendly brush, you’ll find that most brushes snag on the extension bonds of other methods–risking breakage. With Kera-Link, this is less of a concern–though we still recommend that you use the Extension Brush for optimal effect!

As we mentioned briefly in the second point above, Kera-Link bonds blend very seamlessly into the client’s natural hair, in part because the bond is composed of the same kind of protein as human hair. It’s also because the attachment point isn’t too bulky, and the keratin bond itself is pre-colored to the appropriate shade to match the client’s hair color. Furthermore, Kera-Link extensions can be customized into smaller units (by snipping the extension bond vertically in half), so that tiny pieces can be applied to tiny sections of the hair. This makes the extension bonds–which are already basically imperceptible when applied–all but totally invisible, and therefore particularly attractive to clients who rank this among their primary concerns.

Whether you’re a Kera-Link wearer, stylist, or none of the above, learning about the different methods that make up the world of hair extensions enables you to make more personalized choices. It also equips you with the information you need to talk about extensions with others–especially those who may still be on the extension fence. We invite you to read more of our method-related blog posts (linked below), for both Kera-Link and our other prominent methods. You may be surprised at what you learn!

Happy Halloween! (Inspiration Inside)

Monday, October 30th, 2017

Happy Halloween! We’re wishing you a day full of sweets, fun, and fabulous outfits! If you’re anything like us though, you may feel like this holiday has kind of snuck up on you–and that’s okay! Girl’s gotta work, but not necessarily on Halloween costumes. Below, we’ve compiled some easy, last-minute costume ideas that will feature your beautiful Donna Bella locks. We’ll have you party-ready in no time!

For raven hair…

Morticia Addams
Long black hair? Check. Long black dress? Check. Killer makeup? Check. That’s basically all there is to it.

Jackie (from That 70s Show)
Take a cue from Jackie–the fashionable diva/darling played by a young Mila Kunis–and don all of your patterned retro-looking apparel for a distinctly 70s vibe. Finish off with the signature black curls and a whole lot of sass.

For blonde hair…

Put on all your pink things to achieve the well-known Barbie look, and don’t forget Instagram-worthy makeup and the perfect blowout.

Luna Lovegood
This one is particularly fun if–like Luna–you have a lot of quirky clothes and a head of gorgeous, long blonde hair.

For red hair…

Ginny Weasley
To achieve this next Harry Potter-related look, don your signature red mane and your day-to-day clothes (or your old school uniform)–plus a wand. This is easy to refashion into a Lily Potter costume, too.

Channeling this charming Disney princess is as simple as wearing a bikini top and a bedazzled pencil skirt while letting your red hair flow free. For extra ease, pick her just-out-of-the water look: wet hair and a large white cloth draped over her body.

For brown hair…

Lara Croft
Throw your brown hair into a piece-y braid, slip into your grungiest tank top and your shortest shorts, then finish it off with some black tape, toy guns, and a pair of boots.

Blair (from Gossip Girl)
If classy style is more your thing, take a page from Blair Waldorf’s lookbook and style yourself in layers of cute designer or vintage-inspired pieces. Then style your hair with a complementary accessory–like a headband or barrette hat.

For funky hair…

Katy Perry
Katy Perry changes her hair color constantly, so no matter what your current color, you can achieve her look by adding some bright statement clothes and plenty of attention-grabbing accessories.

Sadness, Joy, or Disgust (from Inside Out)
If your hair is blue or green and you’re willing to invest a little bit of time on makeup, make Sadness, Joy, or Disgust your Halloween persona. For Sadness, throw on an oversized sweater and some oversized glasses. For joy, opt for a simple yellow dress. And for Disgust, find a green a-line dress and a purple scarf. If desired, you can attempt to make your long hair appear shorter by styling it in a faux-bob–but we find that it’s not 100% necessary, since people will be able to identify your character mainly from your skin color and/or exaggerated expressions.

For groups…

Charlie’s Angels
All you need for this costume is a couple of friends and a good dose of attitude.

Spice Girls
Recreate the pop-tastic style of the Spice Girls with all your forgotten 90s staples–as well as bodycon dresses, slips, gym clothes, and anything metallic. With the right girlfriends and the right hairdos, you’ll be unmistakable.

Don’t forget to snap and share a picture of yourself wearing your Donna Bella hair extensions and costume! We love to see the looks you create, including all the ways that you style your hair!

How to Make the Most of Your DB Color Ring

Sunday, October 22nd, 2017

Here at Donna Bella, we believe that the DB Color Ring is the #1 most important tool an extensions stylist can have in their toolkit. This is because the Color Ring helps you sell your hair extension services, and it ensures that you select the proper color for your client–two steps that make the whole installation possible. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again–the consultation is the most critical part of the entire hair extension process, and it can either set you up for satisfaction or start the process on the wrong foot entirely. The DB Color Ring is the consultation tool par excellence, and it can help you do a lot more than just ace your consultations! So if you don’t have one–get one!* And if you do, take a look at all the ways our Color Ring can elevate your business and your customer’s salon experience.

*From October 20 to October 25 (2017), purchase the Donna Bella Color Ring for $20 (instead of $55). Shop now to claim a total of $35 off standard price (no promo code necessary)!

1. Promote Your Practice.

Even before a hair extensions consultation, a Color Ring sitting casually on display on your salon counter can alert your clients to the fact that you offer extension services in the first place. Clients who are unfamiliar with extensions may notice the assortment of silky, beautifully colored strands and feel inspired to ask for additional information, and clients who are familiar with extensions will discern the exceptional quality or recognize the brand. So let your tools promote your business for you!

2. Save Money.

With a Color Ring, you don’t need to have packages of hair extensions available in advance. Introduce your clients to a large variety of extension shades with a tool that you can carry in one hand. You won’t need to splurge on extension pieces that aren’t guaranteed to be used, keeping your inventory manageable and your expenses low, and you’ll see more return on your investment as clients are drawn in by the lure of extensions.

3. Sell Them on the Product.

The Color Ring doesn’t only save you money–it also spares your client from investing blindly in a product that they haven’t seen or handled in advance. You’ll get more customer trust and ultimate buy-in when you can show them upfront what it is that you’re offering. The Donna Bella Color Ring is composed of 54 strands of 100% Human Remy hair–the same hair used in our full extensions–colored exactly to our 54 (and counting!) available shades. This means that the strands look and feel just like the final product.

4. Get on the Same Page.

Sometimes it’s difficult to conduct a color conversation because perceptions of colors differ from person to person. When your client shows up to their color appointment without examples or references, have your Color Ring available as a decoding conversation tool. It will enable you and your client to communicate the colors you’re imagining, and it will allow you to compare the subtle differences in tone and shade present within any single color category.

5. Realize Your Vision.

Whether you’re performing an extension job or not, the Color Ring can be used to visualize color transformations. Have a client who wants to become a brunette but doesn’t know which shade would suit her? Whip out the Color Ring and compare the swatches to her skin tone to achieve the perfect complement, then use the swatch as a guide when testing your color formulation. Who knows? Maybe an unexpected color will catch her eye. Make room in your salon for both inspiration and serendipity, and feel confident in your selections as you do!

6. Predict Color Results.

We always recommend using a test strand when coloring your Hair Extensions with semi or demi permanent dyes. Extra color swatches can be purchased just for this purpose, and for only $2 a piece! You could even prepare a book of pre-colored strands to demonstrate how different extension shades take to different color formulations, for you and your client’s reference.

How do you use your Color Ring to maximum effect? Let us know in the comments below! And if you haven’t gotten a Color Ring yet, get shopping now to take advantage of the current deal!
